Scientific Objectives

At this time, Biogen is primarily considering investigator-sponsored Collaborative Research proposals – should you have a study that fits these areas of interest where Biogen’s input on the design could be considered, please feel free to contact medicalresearch@biogen.com or your assigned Biogen Medical Science Liaison to discuss your idea and timeline to submit.

  • Lupus
    • Pathogenesis:
      • Interferon, myeloid cell biology in autoimmunity and inflammatory disease
      • Biomarkers of disease activity and treatment response
    • Socio-economic burden: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) health disparity and unmet need in real world
    • Treatment patterns and sequencing:
      • Real world evidence (RWE) for organ domain specific disease burden
      • Burden of standard of care, corticosteroid tapering and steroid-sparing strategies
    • Patient centered outcomes including fatigue and cognitive dysfunction
    • AI in image analysis and diagnosis of CLE
    • Skin of color and CLE - RWE retrospective/prospective studies
    • Characterization of CLE subtypes in the clinic

  • Transplant
    • Antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) and microvascular inflammation (MVI)
      • Evaluation of mechanisms in the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of AMR or MVI
      • Use of clinical biomarkers or novel strategies to identify patients with AMR or MVI
      • Long-term outcomes associated with clinical, histologic, and molecular features of AMR or MVI
      • Studies evaluating healthcare-resource utilization or patient-centered outcomes related to AMR or MVI
      • Studies identifying socioeconomic and demographic factors associated with barriers to healthcare access among kidney transplant recipients

Research support is awarded on a highly competitive basis, and submission of research proposals in these areas of interest does not guarantee support will be awarded.

We continuously strive to improve our submission process and provide necessary guidance to investigators.
